Glittering Witch’s Brew

Double double toil and trouble, potion brew and cocktail bubble – the perfect spell to concoct this purple glittering witches brew. Alluring in both appearance and flavor, this magical elixir is sure to enchant your Hallows Eve.

This cocktail is lightly sweet and floral with gin, elderflower liqueur, lime juice, and ginger beer. It’s a simple potion to brew, however as with most potions, the most challenging step is gathering your ingredients. So long as you are able to conjure up some dry ice and glittering purple dust, you can turn this simple sipper into a magical witch’s brew.

A few wise words from a seasoned witch’s brewer…

  1. Fresh lime juice is a must. If you don’t use fresh, your potion will be a dud.
  2. Edible glitter can be found in the baking aisle of most craft stores and of course online, I ordered mine from Amazon.
  3. As for dry ice, there are a few things to note –
    • You must be very careful handling dry ice. Dry ice is COLD. At around -110 degrees Fahrenheit, dry ice can easily burn and cause frostbite if it comes into direct contact with your body. Always use cloth or leather gloves when handling dry ice. Similarly, you cannot ingest dry ice in it’s solid form as it is very dangerous. That said, when dry ice comes into contact with liquid, rather than melting, it skips the liquid form and turns directly into gas. This is what causes the spooky smoke effect in this cocktail. A cocktail that has had dry ice sublimate (turn into gas) in it is safe to drink so long as you don’t touch or ingest the solid form of the dry ice. This is generally fairly easy to do as dry ice will sink to the bottom of your glass. But again, do not touch or ingest solid dry ice!
    • If you are nervous about putting dry ice directly into your cocktail, follow my instructions below on how to serve a batched version of this cocktail that displays the dry ice smoke without putting it directly in your drink.
    • Prepare dry ice as close to serving as possible as it will begin to sublimate. To prepare dry ice for individual drinks, wear gloves and use a screwdriver and mallet to break the block into regular ice-cube-sized chunks. Store the dry ice in a well ventilated container, such as a styrofoam cooler, to avoid a gas build-up. Placing crumpled paper at the bottom of your cooler will help prevent the dry ice from sublimating faster.
    • Your local grocery store may carry dry ice but not all do. I used this website to locate dry ice at a grocery store near me.

Brew this potion with caution and care, and you will create a truly magical cocktail fit for a witch.
